UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Dr Fiona Short

To mark the United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science on Friday 11 February, we are highlighting some of the UK Agri-Tech Centres’ incredible women scientists and engineers. Below, we hear from Dr Fiona Short from CIEL.

Name: Dr Fiona Short

Role with the Agri-Tech Centres: Innovation Manager at CIEL

What led you into a science/tech career?  A summer vacation job in university labs.

What’s the best thing about working in science and technology? Seeing the results of innovation being used either in further research or in the real world.

Why should more women and girls consider working in STEM-related fields? It’s so varied and is constantly moving forward-no day is the same.

Do you have any advice for a woman/girl interested in starting our in a science/tech/engineering career? Don’t focus on one area too soon - try several first if you can and be prepared to change path if required.

Is there a myth you’d like to ‘bust’ in relation to women in scientific, tech and engineering careers? That science is dominated by men – this may have been the case when I graduated but it is significantly different in many areas of science now.

UK AgriTech Centres

The Agri-Tech Centres are a unique collaboration between Government, academia and industry to drive greater efficiency, resilience and wealth across the agrifood sector. A £90m investment from the UK’s strategic innovation agency (Innovate UK) is enabling the Centres to harness leading UK research and expertise as well as build new infrastructures and innovation.
